Match 2: Saturday 7 November 2015- Wimbledon Common‏

A belated thanks to everyone who braved the conditions on Saturday – it was great to see so many DMVAC athletes toe the start line and battle the elements to return with a smile (or grimace?) on their face.

A special thanks and well done to those who were making their cross country league debut – I hope you enjoyed it and will be back for more.
The results are now up on the Intranet and can be found here: http://surreyleague.org/slm/race/112/#all – there are separate tabs for the U13 and the U15/U17s races.
Ina nutshell:
– the U15/U17s came a very creditable 6th out of 17 teams
– the U13s did even better, finishing in 3rd place.
An excellent performance all round, especially when you consider the size (both in terms of numbers and size of the athletes themselves) of the other clubs that we were competing against.

Reigate Priory Holly Run 14th December 2014

The Reigate Priory Holly Run continues to be popular especially for the under 11’s and senior men. In the former category there were 105 in the boys race and 94 girls both racing over 1 mile. Oscar Robert-Shaw was 2nd in 6 mins 39 with John Spillane 15th (7.23) and Dan Phillips 26th (7.37).  Other DMV boys taking part (there is no longer age limit) were Justyn Moore (41st in 8.02), Alexander Robert-Shaw (60th in 8.35) and Edward Phillips (67th in 8.45). There were only 3 girls with Katie Newman 13th (8.03), Imogen Smith 44th (9.32) and Milly Manning 50th (9.41).

DMV runners were rather thin on the ground in the junior age groups, Cameron Smith was 2nd in the under 13 boys race in 11.36 with George Robert-Shaw 5th (11.46) and Alex Friend 11th (12.42) and the team 1st. The under 15 boys and under 17 men ran together with Fred Geen 7th Under 15 in 18.35 and Tom Lowry 3rd Under 17 in 18.49.  Elsa Palmer won the under 15 girls in 11.35, and in the under 13’s Maddie Phillips was 12th (13.27) with Tess Johnson 19th (14.47). Ladies XC League race report – Nonsuch Park, 6th December 2014

REPORT BY DAVE STEAD.

Dorking and Mole Valley AC ladies turned out an all-time record 17 runners in the 2nd match of this season’s Surrey League at a sunny Nonsuch Park and were rewarded with 1st place in division 2 with 86 points. However the individual performance of the day came from under 15 Elsa Palmer who won the combined U15/U17 race in good style recording a time of 18 mins 29 secs for 4kms. Bea Allan was not far behind in 7th position overall (5th U/15) in 20.01 with Lowri Morris in 21.01 (10th U/15). Sole U/17 Hannah Morris was 19th (5th U/17) in 21.22.

The combined Division 1 and Division 2 race for seniors had 379 finishers of whom 189 were in Division 2.  Although the course was considerably shorter and flatter than she is used to, fell runner Hannah Jarvis ran strongly to place 15th overall (3rd Div 2) in a time of 24 mins 40 secs for 6.1kms. Sharon Walker finished just ahead of a fast finishing Rebecca Black (both V40’s) in 15th and 17th positions (26.58 and 27.10). Fiona Blagg  was 23rd (27.36) with W40 team captain Louise Ionascu completing the ‘A’ team in 28.14 (28th). The ‘B’ team were 9th out of 35 teams with 317 points led by W45 Louise Schlaeppi who finished in 28.44 (32nd). Rachel Brunswick celebrated her 50th birthday by recording 30.03 (55th) with newcomers Fiona Sweny and Esther Purdy 61st and 76th in 30.26 and 31.27 respectively. Good support was provided by some fit veterans – Vivien Victor (32.15), Jill Hudson (32.18), Sue Phillips (32.32), Jayne Weeden (33.17), Jane Busby (34.04), Jane Morris (39.10), Louise Parker (40.27) and Zahra Sharples (40.43).

There were 59 runners in the Under 13 race over approximately 3kms with the DMV ‘A’  team 3rd and the ‘B’ team 11th of the 19 teams. Maddie Phillips placed 20th in a time of 13 mins 08 secs with Emico Salvi not far behind (23rd in 13.21).  Next in was Holly Schlaeppi in 31st position (13.38) with Ella Morris 40th (14.05). The other girls finished in a small group with Tess Johnson 43rd (14.22), Evie Parnham 46th (14.26) and Amelia Brien 47th (14.27).

XC Championships Parliament Hill 25 January 2014

It was again mud all the way for runners at the South of England Cross Country Championships on Hampstead Heath, culminating in a cloud burst at the end of the senior men’s race with thunder and lightning torrential rain and swirling winds – traditional cross country.

Dorking and Mole Valley AC had two runners in the Under 13 girls race but Elsa Palmer ran very well to take a good 11th place in a field of 292 timed at 13 min’s 13 sec’s for the 3000 metres.  Daisey  Riley finished plastered in mud after a fall but still smiling, 215th in 16:17.  There were 284 runners in the boys’ race as DMV were led by Fred Geen who was in 53rd position timed at 12 min’s 56 with Ewan Bate following closely in 13:05 (63rd).  First year runners in the age group Cameron Smith and George Robert-Shaw did well to finish in 131st (13:42) and 174th (14:10) respectively.  Seven DMV girls ran in the Under 15 race over 4,000 metres with Bea Allan 74th (17:25) and Hannah Morris 101st (17:49).  Also enjoying a good run out were Megan Winslade (179th in 19:13), Ellie Parnham (197th in 19:33), Alice Blair (219th – 20:12), Lucy Brett (224th – 20:17) and Sophie Hosking (268 – 22:12).

The under 15 boys were one short of a team with Tom Lowry 66th in a time of 17:44, followed by James Kelly 169th in 19:12 and Oliver Appleby 237th(21:21) as  258 completed the 4,500 metres course.  There were 208 finishers in the Under 17 men’s race over 6000 metres with DMV 12TH team out of 22 complete teams.  Alistair Masson did very well to place 38th in 22:36, the conditions probably suiting his orienteering skills.  Ben Brunswick and Charlie Wyllie finished in the top half of the field 86th and 103rd respectively in 24:06 and 24:27, with Oliver Baker recording 25:38 (153rd).

Nearly 500 ladies of all standards turned out for their 8km race with DMV having 6 runners. Two weeks before her National Championship Badminton Star Georgina Bland placed 58th in 35:44 with W40’s Rebecca Black and Louise Ionascu134th (38:01) and 167th (39:17) respectively.  Louise Schlaeppi (W45) was 289th in 43:55 with Agnes Molendowska in 386th position (49:26) and Zahra Sharples 460th in 61:08.  The team were 31st out of 72 complete teams.  There were approximately 1,000 runners in the senior men’s race over a strength sapping  9 miles.  Michael Rolfe (M40) ran impressively to record a time of 59:32 in 143rd position with Surrey M45 Champion Fraser Dawson 246th in 63 min’s dead.  Youngsters Daniel Jeffries and Nathaniel Booker were timed at 64:17 and 65:21 respectively, 285th and 329th.  Team captain David Moore was in 374th position timed at 66:23 just ahead of fellow M45 Gareth Stace  418th in 67:22.  Rob Russell was 1st ‘B’ team runner in 68:45 (475th), followed by M45’s Rob Gill 542nd position in 70:24 and Kevin Stroud not far behind approximate time 71:00.  After his lay off Bruce Harrold was 582nd (71:44) with M50 Graeme McKay in 615th (72:25).  Completing the DMV contingent were Rob McCaffrey (M45) who was 709th (75:16), Patrick Martin (M55) 804th in 79:05 and Kevin Irvine (M60) 952nd in 91:20.

Surrey XC League Division 1, Nonsuch Park

In the Girls and Ladies matches, DMAVC had 10 girls (out of 30) running in the U15 race, and 14 (out of 39) running in the U13 race. Only one other club had a complete team in each age group. The result was that DMVAC was 1st, 7th and 8th in the U13 age group and 2nd and 5th in the U15. The senior ladies only had 7 runners but with plenty of quality they finished in second place. More importantly all three teams are in 1st place overall. Congratulations to all our athletes and their coaches.

Sat 10th November 2012

Surrey XC League Division 1, Epsom Downs

DMVAC Juniors won the U/13 team race with 21 pts which was only made possible by the efforts of Sam Cliff and Joe Edwards who had ran at a very muddy Beths Grammar School, Bexley Heath in the regional final of the English schools X-C final at 12.30, then were driven at speed back to Epsom Downs to run in the 2.30 U/13 boys race – a really great effort by the boys and their driver!

Individual results: George Grassley, running in his first Surrey X-C League match for DMVAC was 1st, Sam Cliff 2nd, Joe Edwards 5th, Ewan Bate 7th.
After two matches, the DMVAC U/13 Boys are in 1st place.

In the U17/15 Boys race DMVAC were 3rd with 21 pts. Ben Brunswick 7th, Tom Lowry was 13th, Henry Allan was 17thth and Oliver Appleby was 24th. After two matches DMVU17/15 are in 3rd place.

English Schools Cup XC Final, Beths Grammar School, Bexley Heath

Earlier that morning at Beths Grammar School, Bexley, DMVAC had 11 of its junior athletes running for Ashcombe and 3 for Howard 0f Effingham in the Regional final of the English Schools Cup. Unfortunately, neither school qualified for the All England final but some good performances were recorded with Sam Cliff 7th of 72 in the U/13 boys, Hannah Morris 4th of 52 in the U/15 girls and Charlie Wyllie 8th of 61 in the U/15 boys.

March 2012

National Inter-Counties – Cofton Park, Birmingham

Congratulations to our runners in this year’s event which was held on Saturday 10th March. Six were selected for Surrey, of whom four ran. Jack Wyllie was a reserve but declined a place due to a new job. Luke had another superb run for 3 laps but had to stop with sickness when 16th. After a couple of minutes he got going again to help the team and still managed 51st (37:36) for 12kms earning a Silver medal for the team, a great effort!

Sam Cliff, who is in the bottom year, had a solid run to place 71st out of 300 in 11mins 17 (3kms), only 8 secs and 18 places behind the Surrey Champion and was 3rd scorer. In the girls race, Hannah Morris did well to be 3rd counter in 56th (12:08) with Bea Allan, who is not yet 12, finishing in 12:20 (85th) with 294 finishers.

February 2012

National Cross Country Championships – Hampstead Heath (24th February)

Runners unable to take part this year missed a perfect day for running – warm, spring like and mostly dry underfoot. Luke Caldwell’s performance in coming 19th in the senior men’s race was outstanding and one of the best seen by DMVAC. Running at 5 minute mile pace he was well ahead of a lot of good athletes and only one and a half minutes behind the winner.

Coach Dave Stead would like to pay tribute to Zahra Sharples, who will probably agree that she’s never likely to be near the front of races, but still finishes all the big competitions with a smile!

Hannah Morris ran particularly well in the under 13’s and could have made the top 30.

SOUTH OF ENGLAND CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS – STANMER PARK, BRIGHTON 28th January

Despite the parking difficulties it was worth the effort ( mention should be made of Nathaniel and Fiona who mountain biked over Ditchling Beacon from Burgess Hill). Congratulations to everyone who ran on what were tough courses albeit in mainly dry conditions.
Highlights were a superb 20th in the senior men’s race from Luke Caldwell and an encouraging 26th in the ladies (Zoe Shannon). The under 13 girls had 2 full teams lead by first year Bea Allen who was 17th with Hannah Morris 34th. Sam Cliff did well to place 36th in the U/13 boys, with another year in the age group. DMVAC Ladies did very well at the Surrey Vets XC held at Richmond Park on the 15th October. Anne Davidson, Rebecca Black and Louise Ionescu placed 17th, 18th and 19th with Louise Schleppi 21st. The V35-V44 came 2nd overall with Jenny Dexter contributing in 26th whilst Anne, Louise and Kim Lowe (35th) secured 3rd place for the V45+ team.

The first DMVAC man was Andy Fay in 18th place followed by Howard Jones in 29th place but the lack of male runners across the age categories was not enough to make up teams.

UK McCain Cross Challenge in Liverpool 27/11/2010

Position Name Time Age Group
33 Luke Caldwell 21.17 U20M
23 Georgie Brunivels 28.33 SW
2 Emelia Gorecka 14.29 U20W

With automatic qualifying positions for the European Cross country Championships up for grabs some of the best runners in the UK were present and competition was fierce. The fairly short distance in the Junior races saw the runners tightly packed with Luke finishing only about a minute behind the winner in 33rd.

Ex-club members Georgie and Emelia also had great runs. Georgie came 23rd in the Senior Women’s Race finishing in front of other well known local runners Emily Wicks and Susie Bush. Despite having been under the weather recently Emelia felt strong on the day and secured her place in the European’s. Emelia won the junior trials last year but as an U17 was too young to qualify so she really deserved her spot this year.

South of Thames XC Team Race 27/11/2010

A late entry from Jim Mahoney, despite running a bushy parkrun pb earlier the same day, meant Dorking fielded a full and reasonably strong team (Team 13 of 29).

Graham Hewett’s recent hard training is starting to pay off. He ran vastly quicker than he did on the same course in October finishing 23rd overall.
Bruce Harrold ran strongly despite rather enjoying his Friday night to place 37th.

Andy Fay is getting back to fine form after his recent knee operation, fighting through the funnel to 77th position. Jim completed the team coming 117th.
Unfortunately the women did not have a full team team but excellent performances from Zoe Shannon (10th) and Louise Ionascu (23rd) did Dorking proud. It’s great to see Zoe finding her form again and racing well for Dorking.

Puttenham MABAC

Below are the results of the penultimate race of the year on Puttenham Common and the updated league tables. It was a lovely day for running and with one race to go Mike Bland looks to have the men’s series tied up, while in the ladies’ series Rebecca Black has just overtaken Charlotte Craig with Lou Ionascu coming up fast, but a bit late to win the series.

In the junior race DMV once again dominated taking the first 13 places and 15 of the top 17 places (out of 21) so very well done.

Reigate Priory Relays

A good turnout saw Dorking enter 4 competitive teams (2 male + 2 female). The Men’s Team A scooped bronze medals in what I believe to be the men’s first medalling at these event’s and it was great to see so many of Dorking’s younger runners competing, showing the older athletes a thing or two and the rest of the competition as well! Trionium Greensand Marathon Full Results

Congratulations to all the runners that completed the Greensand Marathon. I’ve only ever run half of it in one go and that was bad enough! Must have been a good race, as one runner even went so far as to create a song in honour of the race and Dr Rob!

Trionium (to the tune of Jerusalem) by GEOGAB

And have your feet in recent times
Run over Dorking’s hills so green?
And was that famous Doctor Rob
On that first hill climb to be seen?

And did that Doctor Rob divine
Say that “the last ten k was fine”?
But calves and quads did cramp up there
Upon that last Satanic climb!

Bring me my cup of lucozade
Bring me my endless rolling trails
Bring me now, st. johns first aid
Bring me my tee and many ales

I will not stop to view the sights
Nor will I call for Medivac
‘Til I have run Trionium

A great turnout for dorking ensured we came second on the day in the senior race and first in the junior race. We’re now 3rd in the senior league and 1st in the junior league overall. Well done to Rebecca Black and Louise Ionascu who were respectively 1st and 2nd ladies home. Charlie Whyllie had a great run to finish a brilliant 14th in the two lap race despite still being in the U13 age group. Dorking’s other juniors took the 1st 8 spots with Megan Winslade the overall winner of the junior race! Whew! Great work team!

Leith Hill Half Marathon

P1060363.JPG

A beautiful morning saw many strange people racing up and down fields, over haybales with wives and friends hanging on to them for dear life. Then just for fun they ran a hilly half marathon out to the highest point in SE England and back! If there is a better way to spend a Sunday I can’t think of it! Great fun and a brilliant effort by all. Thanks to Rob McCaffery, DMVAC marshals and all the other volunteers who make this great event possible.
